The athletes have arrived from 177 different countries and Pasadena is one of 100 Host Towns who each receive a delegation. Pasadena welcomed athletes from Namibia, Tanzania, and Singapore before they begin competition on Saturday, July 25. A Torch Law Enforcement Relay Run added significance to the gathering that took place mid-day at City Hall.
Entertainment came from the John Muir drum corps plus dance and cheer squads from John Marshall Fundamental and Pasadena High School. Food trucks and an enthusiastic crowd that gave high fives to the participants brought a community feel.

One of the coaches for Namibia's team, Simon Muinjo, told me that each of his 12 athletes had to earn a spot to travel from the southwestern coast of Africa to Los Angeles. Each person was motivated to perform at a peak level.
"Sports is universal where we come together from all over the world and all walks of life. The Special Olympics provides inclusion and acceptance through sports."
His team is competing in basketball, the half marathon, and the 100-meter sprint. During the games that begin on Saturday, July 25 and continue until the event closes down on August 1, about 7,000 athletes will compete in 25 different sports.
The organizing committee has created a world class event. First Lady Michelle Obama is the honorary co-chair along with President Obama and she will appear at the opening ceremonies that take place at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Stevie Wonder and Avril Lavigne are among the enduring superstars who will entertain an expected crowd of 80,000 people.
Thousands of volunteers will assist throughout the event and the hope is that each person who participates will return home satisfied with their achievement and blessed by those they have met.
Sport can mean so much and for these Special Oympians competing in the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles, it's a chance to capture a medal and memories that will last a lifetime.
