Was it in vain that I drank those occasional pints of ale at Lucky Baldwin's at Allen and Colorado in Pasadena while watching the big screen this season? Sports are like relationships. You don't know what the outcome will be even if you try hard.
That's how I'm tricking my mind and emotions and finding solace this NHL postseason. You see, the Kings didn't just get knocked out of contention for a Stanley Cup. I broke up with the LA Kings' Ice Girls. That's right. I transferred my disappointment from the team to the Ice Girls. I decided a break-up was in order.
If they don't contact me over the summer, then maybe come this October I'll give them another try and watch them again.
The news comes on the heels of my going to jail in San Bernardino County. The West Valley Detention Center to be exact.
I'm going to visit one of our kids. M is in his late 20s and lived with us about nine years ago. He had just emancipated from the foster care system at age 18 and it was the first time he had lived with a family. Years earlier, we had adopted his younger sister. We met him as an adolescent when he was living in a group home not too far from us. We were his only family.
This isn't his first visit to the detention center. One thing I've learned is that an enormous industry serves the prison population and some services are expensive. He can only call us collect if he wants to talk and it's a minimum $25 for a pre-paid call and that's good for less than an hour. I understand people aren't there to be coddled, but how is such a high fee justified?
His story illustrates how the tragedies of a violent birth family are passed along to the following generations and why kids who enter the "system" when they're young need foster and adoptive families. And those families need support.
Healing children requires more than a political or economic solution. A family and faith solution is needed. He'll be out, again, soon and we'll point him to the resources he needs and we'll see if he begins to use them this time.
The LA Kings and a visitation to a detention center. Another view of multi-faceted Southern California.
